IRONWOOD — With an abbreviated schedule last week due to bitterly cold weather, no area team moved more than one position in this week’s Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls conducted by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

The four teams receiving votes in the boys polls all held their positions — Marquette (11-3) as No. 2, Negaunee (8-6) No. 4 and Westwood (9-4) as an “others” team in Divisions 1-3, along with Munising (9-3) as No. 5 in Division 4.

But for the girls, now No. 2 Westwood (13-1) and No. 3 Negaunee (11-2) switched positions in the Divisions 1-3 rankings after the Miners lost a four-point decision at Gladstone last Tuesday while Westwood was unable to get a game in.

In addition, Marquette (11-2) held at No. 4 in Divisions 1-3 also without playing a game.

In Division 4, Baraga (11-2) and L’Anse (6-5) each slipped a spot, the Vikings falling to fourth and the Purple Hornets into the “others” category.

That came despite Baraga winning its only game against Chassell, while L’Anse split a games, defeating Houghton and losing to Calumet.

No area teams made mention in the state Associated Press polls, like the UPSSA’s also released today.

In games involving area ranked teams against other ranked teams, the Divisions 1-3 No. 1 West Iron County girls play at L’Anse toinight in a makeup game from Monday night.

In addition, the Negaunee boys play at Westwood on Wednesday, the Divisions 1-3 No. 5 Kingsford girls play at Marquette on Friday and the Baraga girls travel to Division 4 No. 2 Ewen-Trout Creek on Monday.
