Westwood captures county wrestling title

ISHPEMING — Westwood captured the Marquette County Wrestling Meet for high school teams on Wednesday evening on its home mats.

Seeded No. 1, the Patriots defeated Ishpeming in the semifinals 70-6 before dispatching Marquette 51-24 in the championship match.

In the other semi, the No. 2 Redmen downed Negaunee 48-33. And in the consolation finale, Negaunee upended Ishpeming 42-9. Gwinn didn’t compete in the event this year.

“After coming close to winning this title the last couple years, tonight was our night,” Westwood head coach Dan Carlson said after the meet. “Our wrestlers gave great effort and I’m very proud of them.”

In the championship match, which started at 152 pounds, the Pats won eight straight matches, six of them contested.

The contested ones included Rocco Carlson defeating Riley Dickerson by pin in 37 seconds at 160, Spencer Harvala pinning Gideon Bell in 1:04 at 171, Jackson Vidlund pinning Chris Ricker in 4:27 at 215, Sam Gilles pinning Carter Chroman in 23 seconds at 285, Christian Ryan pinning Hunter Brugman in 5:11 at 103 and Joe DeRocha outpointing Payton Holmstrom 6-2 at 112.

Following a double forfeit at 119, Marquette won three straight contested matches. Joe Lagrou pinned Lenny Pizziola in 49 seconds at 125, Griffin Moore pinned Alana Nuorala also in 49 seconds at 130 and Wyatt Kuhlman pinned Connor Traver in 2:51 at 135.

In the final contested match, Westwood’s Tyler Lindholm pinned Marquette’s Nic Swenor in 1:03 at 140.
