WCHA honors pair of Northern Michigan University Wildcats’ hockey players

Atte Tolvanen

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — To say that Northern Michigan University goaltender Atte Tolvanen and defenseman Phil Beaulieu looked impressive last weekend might be a bit of an understatement.

Tolvanen stonewalled Alaska-Fairbanks on Friday night, leading the Wildcats to a 4-0 win over the Nanooks and tying a school record for career shutouts with 12.

The next night, Beaulieu scored three straight power play goals in less than three minutes to earn a natural hat trick as NMU completed its sweep of UAF.

It was Northern’s first hat trick since Dec. 16, 2017, when teammate Darien Craighead accomplished the feat in a win over Ferris State.

Not surprisingly, Tolvanen was named WCHA Goaltender of the Week and Beaulieu earned league Defenseman of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Phil Beaulieu

Tolvanen has racked up four shutouts this year, which puts him in second place nationally, and is currently third in saves with 542.

He has won conference weekly awards this season and was named WCHA Goaltender of the Month in November.

In addition to his third-period offensive surge Saturday, Beaulieu had an assist Friday to bring his total points on the weekend to four. That tied him for the WCHA lead and gave him his second conference weekly award this season.

Beaulieu has now moved into the top 10 nationally in points (18) and assists (14) among defenseman and leads the Wildcats in both categories.

Northern (11-10, 10-4 WCHA) plays at Alaska-Anchorage this weekend. Friday’s and Saturday’s games start at 11:07 p.m. EST.
