MARQUETTE — There was a bit of movement but nothing earth-shaking among area teams in this week’s release of Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls conducted by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Released today, the biggest change might’ve been Westwood dropping from a tie for fifth to the “others” category in the boys’ Divisions 1-3 rankings. That was despite the Patriots not playing a game last week.

Marquette (9-3) remained at No. 2 in the same poll following a 15-point win at Houghton, while Negaunee (7-6) slipped a spot to fourth after splitting a pair of games, losing at undefeated and No. 1 Iron Mountain by a dozen points and upending Manistique at home by eight.

In the Division 4 boys poll, Munising (9-3) slipped two spots to No. 5 after a seven-point loss at Engadine on Jan. 21.

Even less movement was seen in the girls ratings. In Divisions 1-3, No. 2 Negaunee (11-1), No. 3 Westwood (13-1) and No. 4 Marquette (11-2) remained in place. All three of those teams won twice without a loss in the past week. That included the Redettes’ victory at “others” Divisions 1-3 team Menominee on Friday.

In Division 4, Baraga (11-2) bumped up a spot after victories over Wakefield-Marenisco by 40 points and No. 5 L’Anse (6-5) by 22. The Purple Hornets, who remained in place, also defeated now-No. 4 Ontonagon on Jan. 21.

In the state Associated Press polls, which were also released today, Westwood was in the others category in 14th in Division 3, but only missed the top 10 by two votes.

Games involving ranked area teams against other ranked teams include the Westwood boys at Marquette tonight, the Marquette girls at Westwood on Thursday and girls Divisions 1-3 No. 1 West Iron County at L’Anse on Monday.
