Emily Nelson leads West Iron County girls past Ishpeming, 49-39
IRON RIVER — Emily Nelson made 10 of 11 free throws and scored 20 points to lead West Iron County to a 49-39 victory over a shorthanded Ishpeming girls basketball team on Monday night.
The Hematites missed their center, sophomore Rebekah Loman, which hurts a lineup that is otherwise listed as all guards.
“Without having our starting center … I thought we did a good job trying to contain them,” IHS coach Ryan Reichel said. “I think Nelson gets overlooked sometimes, but I believe she is a(n NCAA) Division 2 talent.
“Jocelynn Nyman was great for us in her first start. Team defense-wise, we followed the game plan well.”
Free throws made a difference. Nelson led WIC to a 19-of-25 (76 percent) night at the line while the Hematites were just 3 of 10 (30 percent).
Madison Pruett led Ishpeming with 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
The Wykons jumped out to leads of 14-7 and 28-15 after each of the first two quarters.
