MARQUETTE — Freshman midfielder Caroline Halonen turned a Northern Michigan University record-performance into GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer, the league announced on Monday afternoon.

Halonen earned the GLIAC distinction by scoring six goals and three assists for 15 points for the Wildcats, who went 2-0-1 last week.

She began the week with a four-goal, one-assist game on Wednesday in a 9-0 thumping of Finlandia, tying the NMU record for goals in a game and setting the program record for points with nine, while at Purdue Northwest on Friday, she had a goal and two assists to have a hand in each goal of a 3-0 win over the Pride, adding another goal in a 2-2 double-overtime tie at Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday.

The goal in the final game came in the 84th minute that forced overtime.

Halonen leads the GLIAC in every major offensive category with six goals, four assists, 16 points and 29 shots this season.

It is the first weekly award this season for the Wildcats women’s soccer team, the most recent coming Oct. 23,when Allyssa Milam earned the offensive honor. Not quite a year ago on Sept. 25, forward Jenna Halonen, Caroline Halonen’s sister, and goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto swept the offensive and defensive weekly awards as freshmen.

The Wildcats return to the NMU Soccer Field to start a three-game homestand at 3:30 p.m. Friday in their first GLIAC game against Northwood. NMU also hosts Ferris State at noon Sunday before entertaining Michigan Tech at noon on Sunday, Sept. 30.
