Northern Michigan University Wildcats’ Callum Olpin earns GLIAC Player of the Week in men’s soccer

Callum Olpin

MARQUETTE — Junior midfielder Callum Olpin was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Olpin scored two goals for the first time in his collegiate career in the Wildcats’ 5-0 win over Purdue Northwest on Sunday. That came two days after he netted his first goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of his career to go with an assist in a 2-1 win over Davenport.

Olpin has three goals and two assists for eight points — all career highs for a season — this fall for NMU, 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC.

He’s is the first Wildcat men’s soccer player to earn a weekly GLIAC award since now-junior midfielder Nick Metcalfe did on Oct. 18, 2016, when he won the offensive honor. Earlier that same season, junior defender Edgar Astorga and Ivar Arnason swept the Sept. 27 awards.

Northern, now on a program best-ever four-game winning streak, concludes a four-game homestand with a 1 p.m. Friday game against Viterbo University of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The Wildcats hit the road for a game at Wisconsin-Parkside at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday.
