Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team earns program’s 1st national ranking

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — For the first time in its three seasons of existence, the Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team is ranked in the top-25 NCAA Division II national poll conducted by the United Soccer Coaches.

The Wildcats, who are 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC, jumped into the rankings at No. 22 in the third week of this fall’s poll.

NMU picked up a pair of wins at home last weekend to open the conference season, defeating GLIAC preseason favorite Davenport 2-1 and following it up with a convincing 5-0 victory over Purdue Northwest.

The Wildcats have a program-record four straight wins and also its best start to a season at 4-1.

Fellow GLIAC member Northwood also received votes in this week’s USC poll.

Next up for NMU is its final nonconference game this fall, a home match at 1 p.m. Friday vs. Viterbo University of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Then the Wildcats go to Kenosha, Wisconsin, at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday to play new GLIAC member Wisconsin-Parkside.
