Marquette, West Iron County girls tennis teams tie, 4-4
MARQUETTE — The Marquette and West Iron County girls tennis teams divided just about everything right down the middle, including their final score of 4-4 at the MSHS courts on Tuesday.
Six of the eight matches went three sets with each team winning three, and the schools each won two matches in singles and two in doubles.
“It was a pretty tense day on the courts with the six three-setters,” Redettes coach Derek Sandstrom said. “I’m pleased with the tie because I see where we can get better.”
Marquette prevailed at No. 1 singles when Elysa Olivier outlasted WIC’s Katarina Serbentas 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles as Campbell Kallio came back to beat Livea Mazurek 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, and at No. 3 doubles with Breanne Sandstrom and Ryleigh Jackson bouncing back against Kali Dennis and Lexi Dominici 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
The Redettes’ lone two-set victory came at No. 4 doubles, where Kaeleigh Talbacka and Sydney McCarthy felled Aurora Dahl and Madison Berutti 6-4, 6-1.
Negaunee 7, Ishpeming 1
At Negaunee, the most competitive match of the meet came in the one that Ishpeming won.
Hematites’ No. 1 singles player Madison Pruett held on for a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 win over the Miners’ Abby Nelson.
The seven flights won by Negaunee (3-0) all came in two sets as the Miners lost just five games in them.
That included NHS’ No. 4 doubles team of Olivia Piziali and Shayla Williams and No. 4 singles player Lilly Nelson winning with dropping a game.
“We responded well coming off a nice win from (Monday),” Negaunee coach Kyle Saari said of a 5-3 win over WIC the day before. “Olivia and Shayla picked up a varsity win and did a nice job for us.
“Lilly’s improving each day and has a lot of the traits to win consistently at (No.) 4.”
Ishpeming hosts Iron Mountain Thursday morning.
Iron Mountain 8, Gwinn 0
At Iron Mountain, the Modeltowners’ No. 3 doubles tandem put up the best fight of the meet as Gwinn wasn’t able to field players at No. 4 singles or doubles.
The Modeltowners’ No. 3 doubles duo of Martina Holland and Destinie Staton fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to IM’s Megan Murray and Anna Pirkola.
