Marquette Redettes volleyball wins in 4 sets

MARQUETTE — After a tight opening two sets, Marquette found a second wind and finished with a four-set high school volleyball victory over visiting Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday night.

The Redettes prevailed 24-26, 28-26, 25-14, 25-16.

“Both teams played well to their strengths,” MSHS head coach Mike Morgan said. “The Soo is very technically sound and has several strong players.

“They did a good job early taking away our middle attack and played great defense. As the match wore on, our athleticism paid great dividends.”

Seiler Hruska led Marquette in kills with 22, while Maiya King had 41 assists. Other MSHS statistical leaders were Mikaila Graham were 24 digs, Madison Carter with three service aces and Avery Ledy with one block.

Tellena Nystrom added 19 digs to the winning effort.

“With the ability to have both Mikaila and Tellena on the court, our defense has taken a huge step forward,” Morgan said.

The Redettes also won the JV match 2-1 and freshman encounter 2-0.

Marquette returns to action at home against Negaunee at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

In another match played Thursday at Ishpeming, Iron Mountain swept the Hematites 25-12, 25-20, 25-13. IM’s JV and freshman teams also swept as other details weren’t available on Ishpeming.
