Port Huron to Mackinac Island sailboat race going slowly with light winds

MACKINAC ISLAND (AP) — The annual Port Huron to Mackinac Island sailboat race on Lake Huron turned out to be a slow one.

The Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race started Saturday under light winds and the weather didn’t make for quick progress. Most years the first boats make it across the finish on Sunday, but this year the first two finishers didn’t reach the line until Monday morning.

Results posted online show Doug DeVos’ Windquest was the first across, followed about a half-hour later by David and Peter Askew’s Wizard/Intuition. Both boats took the Cove Island course. There were no finishers yet as of early Monday on the Shore Course.

Race organizers described the race as extremely slow and say they anticipate most boats won’t finish. Winners are determined using a handicapping system.
