NEGAUNEE — Junior shortstop Hannah Voskuhl of Negaunee was the lone area player to receive all-state recognition by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association.

Voskuhl was an all-state honorable mention selection in Division 3.

Not surprisingly, she was one of several Miners players who also received all-district and all-region honors that came out around the same time.

Negaunee (31-8) not only won its first MHSAA district tournament championship in the 12 years of the program this spring, but added a regional title before falling in the Division 3 quarterfinals to powerhouse Sanford-Meridian on June 12.

Voskuhl was joined on the all-district team by junior outfielder MacKenzie Karki, freshman catcher Katelyn Lammi, junior designated player Cassidy Orr, junior pitcher Abby Nelson and junior at-large representative Payton Drew.

Those players were chosen from their district tourney teams, which also was Westwood, Houghton and Calumet, according to NHS coach Randy Carlson.

Making the all-region team, picked from regional participants, were Voskuhl, Karki, Lammi and Nelson.

Those kinds of honors led Carlson to say his team should only get better in future years, as none of these honorees were graduating this spring.

Carlson didn’t have information on players receiving similar honors from other area schools.
