Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site wrestler Dalton Roberts makes USA Wrestling’s World Team

MARQUETTE — A Greco-Roman wrestler from the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site has earned a spot on USA Wrestling’s World Team.

Dalton Roberts secured his berth on Friday at the Senior World Team Trials held in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Americans’ World Team competes in Budapest, Hungary, at the Senior World Wrestling Championships in October.

Roberts had earned an automatic berth into the best-of-three finals at the trials by winning his 60-kilogram (132.3-pound) weight class at the U.S. Open in April.

He faced the winner of a challenge tournament, Ildar Hafizov of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, who was seeking his sixth trip to the World Championships. Hafizov is also a 2008 Olympian who competed for Uzbekistan.

After Roberts lost his opening match 4-3, he came back for a 10-2 tech fall victory, then fell behind 1-0 in the second period of the third and deciding match before coming back to win 4-3.

This will be Roberts’ first appearance at the Senior World Championships.
