Munising Mustangs golfers get home sweep of Manistique Emeralds

MUNISING — Munising picked up a pair of nice victories Tuesday in a dual high school golf meet with Manistique at Pictured Rocks Golf Course.

The Mustang boys topped the Emeralds in a close one, 202-206, with Anthony Mattson earning medalist honors with 40. Bailey Masters, Mitchell Schieding and Caden Kienitz each shot 54 for Munising.

Curtis Byrns was Manistique’s leader as he shot 46, while Marc McKinney had 50, Alex Oas 51 and Brett Boyd 59.

“The boys did really well today,” Munising head coach Bette Immel said. “Anthony is is a dual-sport athlete and he plays baseball at the same time, so it was nice to see him on the course and have a nice score.”

On the girls side, the Mustangs defeated Manistique, 236-257. Munising’s Taylor Downs was medalist with 55, while Nicole Belanger had 59, Kennedy Tate 60 and Sydney Curtis 62.

The Emeralds were led by Jordyn Reque, who shot 58. Payton Hoholik finished with 59 for Manistique, while Sydnee MacPhail had 69 and Emily Mattson 71.

“Our girls team is really young, but each day is an improvement,” Immel said. “This is only their third match of the year and we’ve had very limited practices. With those conditions, I’m pleased with how they did.”
