STEPHENSON — Terry Brower scratched four times in long jump during Tuesday’s Skyline Central Conference track meet.

The Mid Peninsula senior made his other two jumps count, however, as he captured the league title with a school-record leap of 21 feet, 8 3/4 inches on a sunny and warm day.

His latest effort topped the previous best (20-9) by Duane Hammersmith in 1979.

“I tied the school record on my first jump, then I scratched on the next four,” said Brower. “My footing was a little off. Luckily, I didn’t scratch on the last jump.”

Norway captured its first SCC title with 111 points, followed by North Central with 86, Munising 68 and two-time defending champ Rapid River 61.

Rapid River, however, ran without its seniors who were on their class trip.

“This was a great day for us,” said Norway coach Al Trudeau. “The kids ran extremely hard today. Several kids stepped in and took some places. Rapid River also didn’t have 11 seniors today, so that helped us take first place. It’s a long time since Norway took a conference title.”

The North Dickinson girls earned their first Skyline Central crown with 96 points. Stephenson edged Mid Pen 82-80 1/2 for runner-up honors. Munising was sixth with 49 points, while Superior Central was 10th with 10.

“I thought the girls performed well,” Mid Pen coach Bob Reichel said. “The weather was a factor in how they felt today. They ran in the heat quite a bit. Terry had a great day. He jumped and ran real well.”

Munising junior Madeleine Peramaki won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 29.85 seconds and the 1,600 in 5:37.68.

The Mustangs 1,600 relay was runner-up to Mid Peninsula, while Munsing’s Kianne Wendt was third in the high jump.

For Superior Central, Danika Walters was fourth in the 1,600 and Sophia Maki fourth in the 200.

Back in the boys meet, Brower also took high jump (6-4), placed second in the 200 (24.63) and third in the 100 (12.25).

“Once I cleared 6-4, I went right up to 6-7,” said Brower. “I knew I had a chance at 6-7 and wanted to go for the school record. It feels good to be able to jump that high. I think this gives me a little more confidence going into the (Upper Peninsula) Finals.”

Munising’s Matthew Revord won the pole vault, clearing 11-feet, while the Mustangs’ 400 and 800 relays also came up victorious, the 400 in 46.72 seconds and the 800 in 1:38.51. Mason Behning, Alec Blank, Christian Cole and Josh Huotari were on both those teams.

Norway senior Inocencio Stankevich won the 100 hurdles in 15.83 seconds, the 300s (42.69) and helped the winning 1600 relay (3:44.04).

“I thought my form was pretty good,” Stankevich said. “I thought everybody ran pretty good in the 300s.”

North Central senior Connor Robinson won the 1600 (5:03.39) and junior Griffin Johnson copped the 3200 (11:21.3). They also helped the Jets take the 3200 relay (9:09.06).
