Cade Contreras leads Munising boys basketball team past Superior Central to open Class D district tournament

MUNISING — Senior Cade Contreras led four players scoring in double figures as Munising dispatched Superior Central 71-48 Monday night in an opening-round game of the boys Class D district basketball tournament being held in Munising.

“We’re taking them one game at a time,” Mustangs coach Terry Kienitz said after his team posted its third straight double-digit victory over the Cougars this season. “Superior Central has been playing pretty good lately.”

He pointed to the SC’s wins over Norway and Forest Park in February and an overtime loss to Bark River-Harris to end the regular season just last Thursday.

“Our focus was on (senior Joe) Heinonen, since he scored 31 (points) on us the last time we played them,” Kienitz said.

Munising (18-3) kept Heinonen to 17 points while not allowing any other Cougar to score in double digits.

“With our defense, we try to make their offense uncomfortable,” Kienitz said. “Tonight, we just played good defense all-around, we kept our man between us and the basket and closed out good on their shooters.”

Contreras scored a game-high 19 points while pulling down a team-high five rebounds. Senior teammate Alec Blank added 15 points, junior Jesse Matson 14 and junior Dayne Murk 10.

“Jesse Matson was tasked with guarding Heinonen,” Kienitz said. “He played all 32 minutes and for him to contribute 14 points on offense is just a bonus for us.”

The Mustangs held a decisive 21-3 advantage in free-throw attempts.

“At least some of that comes from us always trying to attack the rim and drawing fouls because of it,” Kienitz said.

Junior Roubens Fink added nine points and senior Levi Charlebois seven for SC (10-11).

Munising outscored the Cougars in each quarter, extending a 17-10 lead at the end of the first period into a 33-22 halftime lead and 51-31 advantage after three quarters.

Following this battle for Alger County, the Mustangs’ task gets no easier as they face Rapid River (17-3) at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The Rockets won both meetings against Munising, 59-46 on Jan. 2 and 64-55 on Feb. 13.
