Northern Michigan University Wildcat icers move up to No. 16 in national poll

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University hockey team moved up a spot to 16th in the country despite not playing over the weekend in this week’s U.S. College Hockey Online USCHO.com poll.

The Wildcats (20-11-2 overall, 18-6-2-2 WCHA) finish their regular season this weekend with a home-and-home series against Michigan Tech. Friday’s game will be at the Berry Events Center in Marquette at 7 p.m. with Saturday’s at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton at 7:07 p.m.

NMU’s four seniors will be honored prior to Friday’s game — forwards Filip Starzynski, Zach Diamantoni and Robbie Payne and defenseman Jordan Klimek.

The following weekend, March 2-4, the Wildcats will host a first-round, best-of-three WCHA playoff series with tickets on sale at NMU ticket outlets. Each game will be at 7 p.m.

Most recently, Northern began another winning streak after sweeping Alaska-Fairbanks at home on Feb. 9-10, winning 2-1 in overtime and 4-1. The Wildcats have won nine of their last 10 games, all in the WCHA, and moved into first place until their off weekend allowed Minnesota State-Mankato to retake the No. 1 spot.
