Gwinn boys basketball team unable to hang on in end vs. No. 2 Escanaba

GWINN — The Gwinn boys basketball team caught a tiger by the tail, but was unable to hold on in the end Tuesday night.

After trailing for most of the game, the Modeltowners erased a seven-point deficit to start the fourth quarter and took the lead from the Upper Peninsula’s No. 2 Class A-B-C team.

But Escanaba came roaring back by scoring the game’s final 12 points for a 69-58 victory.

“We played a really good team tough,” GHS coach Jim Finkbeiner said. “Our kids aren’t satisfied anymore just playing good against good teams.

“In the fourth, we were really patient and got some good looks. We had a couple and-one three-point plays and also some good defense.”

Gwinn (3-15) actually took a four- or five-point lead after trailing 51-44 entering the fourth quarter and still led 58-57 with about two or three minutes left.

But led by Ryan Robinette, Escanaba (14-4) broke loose at end.

“They were able to get Robinette the ball in space and he’s as fast laterally as anybody we’ve seen all season.”

Robinette, who scored just four first-half points, finished with 19 after scoring 11 in the fourth. Teammate Jared Nash added 17 and Craig Kamin 13.

Tucker Taylor led the Modeltowners with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Austin Forbes scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Reid Hill had 10 points.

Escanaba also won the JV game 67-26.

On Friday, both teams are at home. Gwinn hosts Superior Central and Escanaba entertains Gladstone.
