David Delarye putback keys Westwood Patriots’ boys basketball victory over Gwinn

ISHPEMING — What senior center David Delarye lacked in quantity Tuesday night, he sure made up for in quality.

Delarye, Westwood’s best rebounder and usually one of its most reliable scorers, had just one basket and scored four points in the Patriots’ 42-40 home victory over Gwinn.

But he sank that basket on a putback with 4 seconds left after a teammate missed a longer-range shot to win.

The score was tied 40-40 after WHS junior Blake Hewitt made a bucket with about 25 seconds left, according to Pats head coach Chad Hewitt.

“We got a stop (on Gwinn’s ensuing possession), called timeout and ran a play, one that we’ll often call in that situation.

“We got a good look, but the ball didn’t go in. David was there to clean it up with his only basket of the game.”

Coach Hewitt said that the Modeltowners were able to use the remaining few seconds to put up a shot from a few feet beyond the 3-point arc that missed at the buzzer.

Westwood junior Nathan Beckman finished with 15 points, while Gwinn was led by Austin Forbes with 13.

Westwood, which won the JV game 48-39, hosts Calumet on Thursday while Gwinn is off until Tuesday when it entertains Escanaba.

Rapid River 64, Munising 55

At Munising, the Mustangs had their ups and downs shooting the ball in a game between two top-five Upper Peninsula Class D teams.

The Rockets (12-1) jumped out to a 22-8 lead after one quarter before Munising (12-2, 7-2 Skyline Conference) closed the gap to 32-24 at halftime.

RR raced out again in the third quarter, going ahead 51-35 entering the fourth.

“Rapid River came out shooting the ball well and we didn’t,” said Munising coach Terry Kienitz, who credited the Rockets with slowing down his team’s transition game.

The Mustangs’ Cade Contreras led all scorers with 22 points, while teammate Alec Blank added 14.

The Mustangs won the JV game 48-41 in overtime.

On Friday, Munising plays at Superior Central.

Sophomore guard Jakson Sager kept the Miners (7-10, 5-5 M-PC) in the game by scoring 24 points, while senior guard Jacob Ennett had 16 points and four rebounds.
