15 high school swimmers, divers from area named All-U.P.

MARQUETTE — Fifteen area high school swimmers and divers were named All-Upper Peninsula earlier this week.

The athletes were chosen by the coaches of the nine teams in the U.P. following the U.P. Finals held at Marquette Senior High School on Saturday, though selection was made both from that meet and their overall performances during the season.

Marquette had nine All-U.P. swimmers, five girls and four boys. The girls honored were Mollie Kilpela, Lexie LaCombe, Erin VanderSchaaf, Paige Whaley and Jayme Winn.

Redmen boys named were Matt Brauer, Jack Caron, Ryan Glvore and Josh Nykanen.

Westwood had three divers honored — Bethany Laakso for the girls and Joey Boburka and Brock Sundberg for the boys.

Jaden West was honored for the Ishpeming-Negaunee boys.

Manistique’s honorees were girls diver Abby Burnham and boys swimmer Joe Barr.

Gladstone’s Tom Desy was named Coach of the Year, while Sault Ste. Marie swept the Athlete of the Year honors, with Aliah Robertson winning the Female award and Leevi Olson the Male.

Robertson set U.P. Finals and pool records twice on Saturday. Her record-breaking time in the 100-yard butterfly was 59.27 seconds and in the 100 breaststroke was 1:06.31.

Olson set a U.P. Finals record of 48.55 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

Here are the other All-U.P. swimmers and divers:

Gladstone — girls swimmers: Sydney Herioux, Taylor McFarlane, Abby Rouleau, Liz Stevenson, Claire Tembreull and Kristen Williams; boys swimmers: Andrew Dykema

Houghton — girls swimmers: Samantha Olson; girls divers: Autumn Sanders; boys swimmers: Colton Haataja, Leif Odegard and Leo Wheeler; boys divers: Andrew Garland.

Kingsford — girls swimmers: Hailey Johnson; boys swimmers: Joe Bachand, Caleb Plumley and Kolbe Raiche.

Sault Ste. Marie — girls swimmers: Aliah Robertson; boys swimmers: Andrew Innerebner, Basil Mansfield, Leevi Olson.
