MARQUETTE — What the Negaunee basketball teams lost, Marquette was willing to pick up today in the weekly high school basketball polls conducted by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

There was some movement in this week’s polls, not surprising for just the second week they were conducted this season.

The Negaunee girls fell out of the top spot in Class A-B-C to a close No. 2, while the Miners boys didn’t receive any votes this week after being an “honorable mention” last week in A-B-C.

But the Marquette boys popped up two spots to No. 1 in the A-B-C poll after a couple wins last week, though the Redettes remained third in their rankings.

The Munising boys also fell out of the top five in Class D, though they are the top vote-getter in the “others” list.

Positions remained constant for four other area teams — Munising remains No. 1 among Class D girls, Ishpeming is still fourth and Westwood fifth in Class A-B-C girls, and Ishpeming is also fifth in Class A-B-C boys.

Two area teams are still in the Associated Press state rankings, too, as Marquette fell out of the “others” list in Class A after suffering its first loss of the season to No. 1 Negaunee last week.

The Miners girls are still seventh in Class C while Munising is also seventh in Class D.

Other Upper Peninsula teams in the state top 10 are St. Ignace, second in Class C girls; Iron Mountain, fourth in Class C boys; Rapid River, fifth in Class D boys; Ewen-Trout Creek, sixth in Class D boys; and Dollar Bay, 10th in Class D boys.

In addition, the Bark River-Harris girls, Cedarville girls and North Central boys are on the others list in their respective Class D polls.

Some of the top games involving area teams include the Negaunee girls going to Westwood on Friday and the Miners girls also going to Ishpeming on Monday; the Ishpeming boys going to Marquette and the Escanaba boys going to Westwood, both tonight; and the Negaunee boys playing at Gladstone on Thursday.
