Baraga, L’Anse take hard boys basketball losses

BESSEMER — Bessemer jumped out to a 25-5 first-quarter lead in a 75-36 Copper Mountain Conference victory over the Baraga High School boys basketball team on Monday night.

Senior Colten Lindemann and sophomore Zach Sackett paced the Vikings with 10 points each.

Bessemer’s Cade Mazzon scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the opening quarter, while Nick Trudgeon added 10 points.

“I thought we did a good job rebounding,” Bessemer coach Richard Matrella said. “We’ve been working on stuff, so it’s been nice to start to see it show through. From an energy standpoint, our kids played great from the start to the final whistle.”

Baraga goes to Lake Linden-Hubbell on Thursday.

At L’Anse, E-TC improved to 8-0 in only the second lopsided win for the Panthers, who have otherwise come out on top of some tight ball games.

“That was nice to not have a nailbiter right down to the wire. We needed that,” E-TC coach Brad Besonen said.

Junior Reese Waara paced Purple Hornets’ scorers with 10 points.

Jake Witt led the Panthers with 19 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks. He also had five assists. Eli Nordine had 18 points and six assists. Jaden Borseth finished with 11 points and six steals.

Cole Borseth had 10 points. Witt had 11 points in the first quarter to help give E-TC an 18-9 lead.

L’Anse hosts Wakefield-Marenisco on Friday.
