Ishpeming-Negaunee swimmers, divers display depth in boys win, girls close loss vs. Kingsford

NEGAUNEE — Despite winning just three of 12 events, the Ishpeming-Negaunee boys high school swimming and diving team used superior depth to pull out an 83-81 victory over Kingsford at the Negaunee High School pool on Tuesday afternoon.

The girls nearly pulled off the same feat, winning three of the 11 contested events and only losing 79-72 to the Flivvers.

Girls team member Jaden West was the only double winner for I-N, nicknamed the Gators, as she won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 7.90 seconds and 500 freestyle in a team record 5:54.25.

The girls’ other victory came in the 200 free relay as Bre Johnson, Mandy Helppi, Annika Tervo and MaKenzee Van Buren won in 2:12.97.

In the boys meet, the Gators’ George Lasko led a 1-2-3 sweep of diving with a winning score of 131.60 points, while teammate Thomas Bagley took the 100 breaststroke in 1:24.46.

I-N also won the boys 200 free relay in 1:50.90 with Owen Morton, Seb DeWitt, Max LoForais and Keegan McGonigle swimming.

Kingsford boy swimmer Caleb Plumley won four events, including a pool record 5:22.71 in the 500 free.

Next up for the Gators is a home meet against Westwood at 4 p.m. today.
