Northern Michigan University hockey player Robbie Payne earns 2nd weekly WCHA honor
MARQUETTE — Senior forward Robbie Payne of the Northern Michigan University hockey team was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for the second time less than two months into the season.
The NMU captain earned the award after posting a hat trick on Friday night in the Wildcats’ 5-3 victory at Alaska-Fairbanks. He took just 10 shots over the weekend, a split after Northern lost 4-1 on Saturday.
It was Payne’s second career hat trick and at the time gave him the national goal-scoring lead. After the weekend, his 12 goals are second in NCAA Division I to only Henrik Borgstrom of Denver, who has 13, and leads the WCHA by four tallies.
In addition, Payne’s 15 points is third most in the league.
He was also named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 9 after scoring four goals the previous weekend vs. Lake Superior State.
Last season, Payne also earned two Player of the Week honors in October and February.
The Wildcats (7-5 overall, 5-3 WCHA) are back on the road this weekend for nonconference games at Nebraska-Omaha (4-5-1) at 8:07 p.m. EST Friday and Saturday.
NMU returns home the following weekend to take on WCHA foe Alabama-Huntsville at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2.
