Northern Michigan University’s Martin Eliasson runner-up at downstate tournament
MARQUETTE — Junior Martin Eliasson of Northern Michigan University finished as runner-up at the GLIAC Fall Invitational college men’s golf tournament held in downstate South Haven at HawkHead Golf Course.
Eliasson finished the two-day event with a score of 5-under-par 139 after shooting 68 on Saturday and 71 on Sunday. It marked his second straight weekend opening with 68 after he did the same at the Al Watrous Memorial Invite in Bay City.
He finished a single shot behind Wayne State’s Brendan Seys, who shot 70 and 68 for 138.
Teammates Kurtis Fontinha, who finished tied for 13th with 73-73–146, and Logan Haight, tied for 30th with 72-79–151, also placed in the top half of competitors.
Owen Bayer, with 83-76–159 and tied for 40th, rounded out Wildcat shooters in a field of 66 golfers.
Overall, NMU was fourth of the 11 schools at the tourney, which included nine GLIAC schools, St. Cloud State (Minnesota) and Lewis (Illinois).
NMU totaled 288 Saturday and 298 on Sunday for 586, 17 strokes behind the winning Wayne State team. Grand Valley State was second with 581 and Saginaw Valley State third with 584.
The NMU men travel to Tiffin, Ohio, to compete at the Kyle Ryman Memorial on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
