MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team returns to action today and Saturday at the Keweenaw Classic hosted by Michigan Tech in Houghton.

The Wildcats open against the University of Mary (North Dakota) at 11:30 a.m. today before facing No. 7 nationally ranked Minnesota-Duluth at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, NMU plays two more Minnesota schools, St. Cloud State at 1 p.m. and Bemidji State at 5 p.m.

Northern has never played Mary, while NMU looks to end an eight-match losing streak to UMD dating back to the Wildcats’ last win in 2004. NMU also has a 12-6 all-time edge vs. St. Cloud, while Northern has an eight-match win streak vs. Bemidji.

Live statistics from these matches will be available through the website nmuwildcats.com, though video won’t be included.  Twitter updates are available at @NMU_Wildcats and @NMU_Volleyball.

Last weekend, Northern senior Kayla Chosa, junior Autumn Monsma and freshman Leticia Antunes were named to the all-tournament team at the Ferris State Invitational.

Chosa made 47 kills and 17 blocks in the four matches; Monsma had 31 kills, eight aces, 48 digs and six blocks; and Antunes posted 40 kills, 53 digs, five blocks and three aces.

Chosa was also named GLIAC North Player of the Week following the tourney.

Senior teammate Madison Whitehead posted her 1,000th kill in NMU’s match against Northwest Missouri State last weekend, the 16th Wildcat to reach that total. She had 39 kills and 12 blocks for the tourney, putting her just 70 kills from reaching Northern’s top 10 all-time in kills.

Another Wildcat, senior Jamie Hogeboom, tallied 163 assists at Ferris to total 2,674, good for sixth in NMU history.

Freshman Sarah Kuehn had 36 kills and 16 blocks at the event as Northern went 3-1 with wins over Northwest Missouri, Quincy and Missouri Western State with only a loss to Upper Iowa.
