MARQUETTE — The men’s and women’s soccer teams at Northern Michigan University will open their home campaigns each with a pair of nonconference matches over the next four days at the NMU Soccer Field.

The Wildcat men (1-0-1) host Upper Iowa at 4 p.m. today before taking on Marygrove College at noon Sunday.

The NMU women (0-2-0) entertain Minnesota-Duluth at 2 p.m. Friday before taking on Bemidji State (Minnesota) at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Northern men opened with a 1-0 victory on Aug. 31 over Indianapolis, picked second in the preseason poll for the Great Lakes Valley Conference, as David Feldmann scored the game’s only goal in the 78th minute. NMU tied Missouri-St. Louis 2-2 in double overtime on Saturday after opening a 2-0 halftime lead on goals from Iceland natives Sveinn Karlsson and Birkir Baldursson. Sophomore goalie Filippo Torelli of Italy played all 200 minutes in goal over the weekend.

Upper Iowa is 2-0 this season and Marygrove 2-2 with these being the first times the Wildcats have played them in their second season of existence.

The Wildcat women fell to a pair of Minnesota schools last weekend. St. Cloud State posted a 3-0 win on Friday, though NMU held the Huskies scoreless in the second half, then lost 4-1 at Winona State on Sunday as freshman Jenna Halonen scored for Northern in the 52nd minute.

Minnesota-Duluth is 1-0 this season as NMU is 3-13-3 all-time against the Bulldogs, while Bemidji is also 1-0 with Northern owning a 6-5 advantage all-time against the Beavers, their last win coming in 2011.
