MARQUETTE — The Superiorland Kiwanis have named Izzie Peterson and Alec Olivier as the Marquette Senior High School Athletes of the Month for May.

Peterson, the female athlete of the month, won her award based on a consistently high effort she puts forth both in track and field practice and at meets.

She was cited for a fantastic performance at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 1 regional meet, where she won in the 200-meter dash, took second in the 100 and was part of the Redettes’ winning 800 relay team.

Peterson, a senior, looks to defend her 100 and 200 titles at the U.P. Finals on Saturday.

In addition to track, Peterson is also a four-year member of the MSHS girls basketball program. She received All-U.P. honorable mention while also serving as a co-captain on the varsity team this year.

She is also a high achiever in the classroom, where she currently has a 3.59 grade-point average.

Peterson volunteers at Willow Farm Therapeutic Riding and has also served as a Bay Cliff Health Camp counselor.

She has signed a national letter of intent to attend Northern Michigan University this fall, where she plans to participate in the Wildcats’ indoor and outdoor track & field program and enroll in the pre-veterinary program.

Olivier, the male athlete of the month, earned his award for outstanding play and leadership on the boys tennis team.

Olivier, a sophomore, was cited as a tough competitor who is consistent and will never beat himself.

In 2016, Alec was the U.P. champion at No. 1 singles as a freshman. He was named U.P. Player of the Year in addition to receiving all-state and All-U.P. first team honors.

His overall record in 2016 was a perfect 17-0. He is again the premier player in the U.P. this year with an undefeated record and looked to defend his U.P. Division I championship at the Finals that took place on Wednesday.

Olivier also succeeds in the classroom with a 3.05 GPA.

He currently serves as a board member of the Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society.

Olivier said he would like to continue his tennis career at the University of Montana, where he would major in wildlife biology.
