Marquette Redmen split to open season, Negaunee Miners sweep in high school baseball action

KINGSFORD — The Marquette Redmen got their baseball season off to a good start Monday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at Kingsford.

The Redmen won the opener 3-2 before falling in the nightcap 7-3.

Marquette struck first in the opener with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Flivvers tied it in the second. The Redmen then pushed across two runs in the fifth and held Kingsford to one run in its half of the inning to pick up the win.

Garrett Finkbeiner picked up the win for Marquette after giving up five hits and striking out two.

Tyler Delmont led the Redmen offensively as he went 1 for 3 with an RBI, while John Thomson had a hit and a run scored.

In the nightcap, Marquette got on the board first with a run in the top of the second, but Kingsford answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and four in the fifth.

Delmont went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI, while Blake Henriksen had a double, triple and a run scored. Tanner Judd and Jakob Peterson also drove in runs for the Redmen.

Marquette plays a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. today at Norway.

Negaunee 6-7, Iron Mountain 0-2

At Iron Mountain, the Miners threw a combined no-hitter to earn help sweep the Mountaineers.

In the opener, Negaunee (2-2) got on the board first with four runs in the first inning. The Miners then padded their lead with two more in the third and cruised from there.

Mark Anderson earned the win on the mound for the Miners after ringing up five Mountaineers in 3 1/3 innings of work. Offensively, Negaunee was led by Carter Richardson, who went 3 for 4. Both Anderson and Brock Aho had two hits for the Miners.

In the nightcap, the Miners scored five runs in the top of the fourth to earn a 7-2 win and complete the sweep. The game was called due to darkness after five innings.

Tanner Peterson earned the win for Negaunee after giving up two runs on no hits and getting six strikeouts in three innings. Alex Zampese completed the game on the hill for the Miners, picking up five strikeouts in two innings.

Anderson went 2 for 3 at the plate for Negaunee, while Neal Violetta had two hits.

“Today went really well,” Miners head coach Jason Siik said. “Our pitching was great and we threw strikes. There was also a lot of energy around the team. It showed that all of the work we did at the beginning has helped. We’re showing some improvement.”

The Miners play at Gladstone Wednesday.
