Baraga, Republic-Michigamme basketball players honored by Copper Mountain Conference

REPUBLIC — Baraga High School senior Carsyn Osterman was named the Most Valuable Player in girls basketball for the Copper Mountain Conference recently.

Osterman led the Vikings to the top record in the 11-team league of 14-1, including 9-1 in the Copper Country Division.

The MVP award in the new league that combined the Copper Country and Porcupine Mountain conferences is named the Edward E. Helakoski award.

Osterman also earned berths on the girls’ All Conference Elite Team and First Team all-conference in the Copper Country Division.

Other girls honored were senior teammates Casey Mleko and Justice Kinnunen as Second Team all-conference in the CC Division, and Republic-Michigamme senior Taylor Kaminen as CC Division honorable mention.

On the boys side, R-M junior Dylan Hanninen was named to the Second Team in the CC Division, while Baraga senior Jake Putala was a CC Division honorable mention.

The Hawks compiled records of 5-10 overall in the league and 4-6 in the CC Division.
