WCHA recognizes 11 Northern Michigan University hockey Wildcats as scholar-athletes

MARQUETTE — Eleven hockey players from Northern Michigan University were recognized recently as scholar-athletes by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Seniors Brock Maschmeyer and Sami Salminen will graduate having earned this award each season they were eligible for it.

The award is bestowed upon student-athletes in the WCHA’s 10 men’s and eight women’s programs who have a cumulative grade-point avearge of 3.50, or have a 3.50 GPA during the two most recent semesters. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible.

This season, 145 student-athletes earned the award, led by the Bemidji State men’s team with 12. NMU, Alabama-Huntsville and Ferris State tied for second with 11 each.

It was also the most Wildcats honored since the school rejoined the league for the 2013-14 season.
