IRONWOOD — Teams from Munising, Marquette and Negaunee made gains this week in the high school basketball polls released today by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

The Munising girls (17-0) rose to the top of the Class ABC girls rankings after former No. 1 Houghton (18-1) lost at Marquette on Thursday, 43-40.

And the 16-2 Redettes also benefitted from that win, moving from fourth to second as they knocked the Gremlins down to third.

Those rankings are quite unsettled, though, as Munising received four first-place votes and Marquette, Houghton and Norway earned one each.

In addition, Ishpeming didn’t receive any votes after the Hematites had received several in past weeks.

In the Class ABC boys rankings, Marquette (16-1) remained No. 1 but Negaunee (12-4) moved up a spot to fourth despite the Redmen posting a 64-60 overtime win in Negaunee on Thursday.

The only other area team ranked is Baraga (15-2), which remained No. 2 in the Class D girls poll after winning its lone game last week.

In state Associated Press polls also released today, three area girls teams are listed with none on the boys side.

Munising rose two spots to fourth in Class C, Baraga stayed put at seventh in Class D and Marquette slipped back to 13th in Class A, missing the top 10 by 10 votes.

The Redettes haven’t been able to crack the top 10 all season, but got within a single vote last week.
