Marquette YMCA Killer Whales win plenty at Deer Camp Invitational

MARQUETTE — The Marquette County YMCA Killer Whales hosted their annual Deer Camp Invitational swim meet against the Northern Lights YMCA of Delta and Dickinson counties and the Menominee-Marinette, Wisconsin, YMCA, on Nov. 18-19.

Some 86 Killer Whales swam capturing 58 wins, 53 in individual events for a commanding 1,227-point total over runner-up Northern Lights.

Sister Erin, age 13, and brother Colin, 11, VanderSchaaf led the way with win in all six individual events they swam along with relay wins.

Other multi-event winners included Delaney Marchiol, 12, Jack Pozega, 8, Madelyn Schetter, 6, Graham Tollefson, 10, Carson VanderSchaaf, 11, Anton Voigt, 6, and Sevi Voigt, 9.

Ten swimmers also swam YMCA state meet qualifying times at the event. They include the following:

Taryn Aho, 14 — 1,000 freestyle, 200 breast

Elle Durand, 8 — 25 backstroke

Delaney Marchiol — 500 free, 200 individual medley

Jack Pozega — 100 free, 50 back

Kaytlin Roell, 7 — 25 butterfly

Grace Sobczak, 10 — 50 free, 50 back, 200 free, 200 IM

Carson VanderSchaaf — 100 free, 100 breast, 100 IM

Colin VanderSchaaf — 100 free, 200 free, 200 IM

Erin VanderSchaaf — 200 free, 200 back, 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM, 1,000 free

Paige Whaley, 14 — 500 free

Three relays also swam state qualifying times, the boys 11-12-year-old 200 medley and 200 free relays with VanderSchaaf, VanderSchaaf, Liam McFarren, 11, and Archer Olson, 12; and the girls 13-14 200 medley relay of Aho, VanderSchaaf, Whaley and Mollie Kilpela, 14.

The Killer Whales are coached by Shawn Robinson-Sobczak.
