Marquette Senior High School hockey team edges Escanaba, 2-1

ESCANABA — Sophomore forward Elliot Samppala scored the game-winner with 4:35 left to give Marquette a 2-1 high school hockey victory at Escanaba on Tuesday.

Samppala cashed in a turnover in the Escanaba zone, according to a report from the Escanaba Daily Press.

“That line made a nice play,” Marquette coach Doug Garrow said. “Branden Campbell (senior forward) made a good pass and Elliot was able to capitalize. It turned out to be a nice game-winner for him.”

Marquette’s second goal took place less than two minutes after Esky senior Chris LeMire tied the contest off a faceoff won by classmate Parker LaMarch in the left circle of the Redmen zone.

“That was a good response by our guys,” said Garrow. “It was important for us to answer right away and take the momentum back.”

Marquette sophomore forward Sean O’Connor opened the scoring from the low slot on a breakaway as Esky was making a line change 12:17 into the second stanza.

Tyler Bergwall made 26 saves for the win in the Marquette net, as his skating teammates finished with 31 shots on goal.
