Marquette JV hockey team picks up wins over Escanaba, Houghton

MARQUETTE — The Marquette JV hockey team has defeated the Escanaba JVs twice this month, along with adding a victory over Houghton.

On Jan. 17, Marquette’s Jaden Lessard scored the game-winner on the road with less than four minutes remaining to defeat Esky 4-3.

Aaron Young posted the home team to a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes before Marquette stormed back with three straight goals in just over eight minutes during the second period.

Jaden Lessard got the Redmen on the board with a power-play goal exactly four minutes into the period, while Gaetano Cammarata added two more, one on a power play, to make it 3-2 Marquette.

Esky answered with Joey Jacobson goal with 1:02 left in the second to tie it 3-3 entering the third.

Carter Peterson and Rory O’Connor each had two assists in the second period, while Brent Kroll had one. Sterling Wright and Cam Kallio assisted on Lessard’s game winner as MSHS goalie Soren Higgins stopped 16 shots for the win. Meanwhile, Marquette peppered Eskymos netminder Trevor Denome with 39 shots.

On Jan. 5, Kroll tallied a goal and an assist and Cammarata had a three-assist playmaker as the Marquette upended Escanaba 5-1.

Kroll scored a power-play goal during a four-goal barrage by the Redmen in the first period. His goal was the middle one of three put in during a 4:11 span past Denome.

Other goals were scored by Kallio, Lessard and Ryan Houle in the opening period, along with one by Ethan Hayes late in the second.

Escanaba averted the shutout being posted by MSHS goalie Braden Golisek by scoring with just 2:08 to go.

Peterson had two assists for the Redmen, while Wright and O’Connor had one each.

Golisek finished with nine saves while Denome had 37, including 29 during the first two periods.

On Jan. 8, the Marquette JVs won in Houghton 4-2 by scoring the game’s final three goals.

Kroll tied the game 2-2 in the third period after a flurry of shots in front of the Gremlins’ net, then Wright notched the game-winner with about five minutes to go, getting an assist from Kroll.

Marquette added an empty-netter in the waning seconds off the stick of Cammarata.

Early in the game, the Redmen scored first in the second period, taking a pass from Cross Lakenen and tucking a shot between the goalie’s legs, though Houghton’s Nick Laux tied it before the period ended.

The Gremlins took their only lead, 2-1, early in the third on a quick wrist shot by Jordan Reynolds.

Higgins made 15 saves in the Marquette net to earn the victory, while Luke Docket and Tyler Bakkila combined for 35 Houghton saves.
