Marquette Mutineers hockey team splits series at Mosinee, Wis., takes over 1st place in Great Lakes Hockey League

MOSINEE, Wisconsin — The Marquette Mutineers split a two-game series last weekend at the Mosinee Papermakers, losing 10-5 on Friday and winning 8-6 on Saturday.

The Mutineers’ record stands at 4-1 on the season after the weekend as they moved into sole possession of first place in the 10-team Great Lakes Hockey League.

They lead the Fond du Lac Bears and West Bend Bombers, both from Wisconsin, by a half-game at 3-1.

The Calumet Wolverines and Portage Lake Pioneers from the Copper Country are tied for fourth at 2-1.

“To be in first place this early in the season is awesome,” Marquette forward and captain Joey Enright said. “We’ve really been clicking as a team and we’re going to keep on moving together to stay at the top of the GLHL.”

The Mutineers are the follow-up adult hockey team to the Marquette Iron Rangers after changing ownership in the off-season.

On Friday, the host Papermakers jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period before Marquette fought back in the third to get within 6-4 and 8-5.

Enright and fellow forward Dallas McLaughlin each scored twice for the Mutineers, while another forward, Ryan Sullivan, had a goal and two assists. Enright, Ryan Daust, Brandon Smaby and Andrew Plomer all had single assists.

“We got to make sure we have good (defensive) zone coverage out there. They’re just getting too many shots,” Plomer said. “Our goalie saw too many shots out there and we got to make sure we’re covering their points.”

Mosinee finished with 50 shots on goal against Marquette netminder Mike Madosh, while his teammates totaled 35 shots on goal.

On Saturday, the game went back and forth with neither team having more than a one-goal lead until the game’s final two seconds. Marquette forward Craig Hartz had a rebound goal with eight minutes to go in the first period to tie the score 1-1, then Sullivan potted one about 4 1/2 minutes later to give the Mutineers their only lead, 2-1, until the final three minutes of the game.

That lead lasted about three minutes when Mosinee retied it 2-2 with 15 seconds left in the opening period.

Each of Marquette’s next four goals, which spanned the entire second period and more than half of the third, tied the score.

Enright made it 3-3 with 4:05 gone in the second, Andy Evans knotted it at 4-4 with 6:53 elapsed in the second and McLaughlin got it to 5-5 with just 32 seconds left in the middle period.

Sullivan tied it 6-6 with 8:47 left in regulation before goals by back-to-back goals by McLaughlin with 2:43 and 2 seconds left made for the final margin.

Multiple assists went to McLaughlin with three and Daust and Enright with two apiece.

“This was a huge win,” Hartz said. “We came out to play a solid game and when we were down we never gave up.”

Madosh stopped 59 shots while his teammates had just 38 shots.

Marquette continues its Wisconsin road trip this weekend with a Friday game at the West Bend Bombers (3-1) and Saturday game at the Fond du Lac Bears (3-1).
