Marquette County YMCA Killer Whales swim at Fox Cities Invitational

APPLETON, Wisconsin — The Marquette County YMCA Killer Whales swim team had 25 youths compete at the Fox Cities Fall Invitational on Nov. 4-5.

Ranging in age from 7 to 17, the Killer Whales competed against YMCA teams from the Fox Cities, Green Bay and Oshkosh in Wisconsin along with the team representing Delta and Dickinson counties in the Upper Peninsula.

Erin VanderSchaaf, age 13, took home first place in four events, the 400-yard individual medley in 4:57.65, 200 IM in 2:25.66, 100 backstroke in 1:08.03 and 100 butterfly in 1:08.71. She was also runner-up in the 100 free (1:00.14).

A Killer Whales’ triple winner was Lyndsey Welch, 17, won won the 200 IM (2:31.57), 100 breaststroke (1:14.47) and 100 fly (1:04.24).

Double winners included Kaytlin Roell, 7, who won the 50 freestyle (45.34) and 25 fly (21.46); Carson VanderSchaaf, 11, the 50 free (29.32) and 50 fly (32.80); Colin VanderSchaaf, 11, the 100 free (1:02.23) and 50 back (34.61); and Paige Whaley, 14, the 100 free (59.06) and 200 free (2:07.42).

Single event winners were Taryn Aho, 14, who won the 100 breast (1:13.98); Elle Durand, 8, 25 back (21.67); and Jack Pozega, 8, 25 back (21.18).

The Girls 13-14-year-old 200 free relay team were also winners. They were Erin VanderSchaaf, Taryn Aho, Lexi LaCombe and Paige Whaley.

Additional swimmers with top-three finishes include Olive Krueger, 7, Delaney Marchiol, 12, Grace Sobczak, 10, and Abigail Jankowski, 7.

Other Killer Whales swam times that met qualifying standards for the YMCA Wisconsin State Championship Meet in March.

They include Taryn Aho in the 1650 free and 100 breast; Jack Pozega in the 25 back; Grace Sobczak in the 50 back, 100 free and 100 IM; Carson VanderSchaaf in the 100 free; Colin VanderSchaaf in the 50 breast, 100 free and 100 IM; Erin VanderSchaaf in the 200 IM and 400 IM; and Paige Whaley in the 200 free and 400 IM.
