They got in it convincing fashion.

The Copper Kings took control quickly in the first period and didn’t let up to defeat Marquette 6-1. The game was called midway through the third period after one of the glass boards fell out of place and couldn’t be adequately repaired. Brent Loukus and Daylen Anderson both had two goals for Calumet.

“I thought we skated well tonight,” Calumet head coach Dan Giachino said. “We got some really good jump up front and accomplished what we wanted to. We got the puck in deep and used our strength, which is our speed, on their defensemen.”

For the Redmen, it was a disappointing ending after picking up an overtime win over Romeo on Saturday. Marquette just looked a step behind the entire game and never recovered.

“They were the better team,” Redmen head coach Doug Garrow said. “They were way better than us tonight. They were faster and they made their decisions quicker than we did. We were slow in all facets of speed.

“I don’t think we had a whole lot of chances because we were slow. There’s not much to say about it. We didn’t have time or space to do what we wanted.”

Calumet struck first at the 7:58 mark of the opening period when Loukus received a back-door pass and tapped it into an open net. Marquette answered quickly, though. Just 23 seconds later, Redman Joe Phillips corralled a loose puck, raced past the Calumet defense and scored top-shelf on Copper Kings goalie Nicholas Voelker.

After that, it was all downhill for the Redmen. Calumet took the lead again on an almost identical goal to its first, only this one was scored by Anderson on the power play. The Copper Kings led 2-1 after the first and kept rolling.

Early in the second period, the Kings’ Matthew Yeo took a shot from the point that went just under the crossbar and Calumet went up by two goals. Less than two minutes later, Calumet tallied another goal as Trevor Johnson led a big rush and just tucked the puck past Marquette goalie Dylan Sibilsky. Anderson notched his second goal of the game when he beat a sprawling Sibilsky to the far post.

Marquette then pulled Sibilsky and put in Tyler Bergwall. However, Calumet wasn’t affected by the change and picked up its sixth goal late in the period when Loukus put in a rebound for his second tally.

Calumet (1-4) hosts Rochester United on Friday, while Marquette plays Warren De La Salle at Lakeview.
