Ask Marilyn: This Week's 'Strictly Personal' Question
Raya in Istanbul, Turkey, writes:
Marilyn: I'm 14 years old, and I think the people I go to school with are idiots. I mean that they are stupid, immature, and disgusting. Next year I will be at high school, and I don't see how I can stand it. One of my teachers told me that I will be always be around those kind of people, so I have to get used to them. I don't get it. Why don't they try to improve? I sit at home too much and surf the Internet. What should I do?
My guess is that you're mature for your age. Fourteen-year-old boys can behave abominably, all right! And the girls often have a fine time treating other girls badly. But this is because they're all young. Most of those awful antics will go away with time. In the meantime, you must not spend too much time alone. If you do, you won't become as sophisticated or socially adept as they will, and they'll become more mature than you, instead of the other way around. That will make it harder for you, both personally and professionally.
So please, please, get out of the house more. Join clubs for young people with interests similar to yours, if possible. Do you have any older brothers or sisters? If so, ask if you can join them for activities occasionally. Try to find neighbors whom you like, and invite them to do things with you, such as going to a movie.
The point is this: Don't withdraw from the world. Real life is nothing like elementary school or high school.
