Ask Marilyn: Those Adorable Little Rattlesnakes

Bobbie Irwin of Montrose, Colorado, writes:

Marilyn: You stated that the natural attraction to baby animals didn't extend to reptiles and insects, and I have to disagree. (September 9, 2012) I once saw a baby rattlesnake that was so cute, I wanted to take it home—although I resisted the urge! And the baby lizards in my garden are as cute as can be. Also, have you never seen a baby praying mantis? They look exactly like the adults, but tiny, and they are definitely appealing. I'd often heard the theory that we're attracted to baby critters with human-like faces, but I think that's only part of it.

Marilyn responds:

I think you're an exception, Bobbie! Your comment about the baby praying mantises is especially interesting. If they look just like the adults—but tiny—I wonder what makes them cute. Hmm.
