MARQUETTE, MI. - Florence Helen Tuominen, age 100, of Marquette, entered eternal life on Monday, Septemeber 1, 2014 at Mill Creek Assisted Living in the loving care of her family and caregivers of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Florence was born October 14, 1913 in Ishpeming to Charles and Kate (Skews) Simons and was a graduate of Ishpeming High School Class of 1931. Following completion from high school, she enrolled at St. Luke's School of Nursing graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1935. Upon graduation, Florence started her Nursing career at St. Luke's Hospital. Later working for Dr. Copperstock and Dr. Nidiffer in Pediatrics. In her spare time, Florence was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church volunteering with the Altar Guild and Circle I. Outside of her church family, she was a member of St. Luke's School of Nursing Alumni Association and the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jane (John) Hicks; her four grandchildren who best knew Florence as "Grandma Cookie", Steven (Christine) Rector, Daniel (Carol) Rector, Christopher (Anne) Rector and James (Brenda) Rector; her 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Tuominen on May 23, 1960 and her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara (Frank) Rector.
Friends may call at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held in the church at 7:00 pm. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Paul Episcopal Church or Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the caregivers at Mill Creek Assisted Living and to the caregivers at Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice for the wonderful care given to Florence.
