ISHPEMING, MI. - Donald L. DeRoche, age 90, of 210 Prospect St., Ishpeming went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 10:15pm while a resident at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He had been in the loving care of his family the staff at Jacobetti and the UP Home Health and Hospice.
Donald was born November 6, 1923 in Champion, Mi the son of the late Peter and Evangeline (Nault) DeRoche. His family moved from Champion to North Lake Location when Donald was 3 years old. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1943. Donald served in the United States Army during World War II serving in the European Theater and was involved in the invasion of Normandy and the liberation of France on VJ-Day. He returned to this area following his service time and worked for the Michigan National Guard for 37 years, retiring in 1983 as Chief Warrant Officer 4.
Donald was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Michigan National Guard 49ers Club, the Ishpeming American Legion and the Ishpeming VFW. Donald enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He also loved to spend time at camp on Lake Arfelin, enjoying swimming, hunting, fishing and 4-wheeling. When he found time to sit down he always enjoyed a coffee royal. Donald was a generous supporter of charities. He enjoyed the companionship of his dear and special friend Eunice LaBelle.
Survivors include 5 children Linda (James) LePak of Toney, AL, Denise (Patrick) LaFave of Marquette, Daniel (Karen) DeRoche of Gwinn, Donald (Irene) DeRoche of Michigamme, and David (Laurie) DeRoche of Ishpeming; 20 grandchildren along with numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lola Mary DeRoche in 1998, sisters Ethel Carter and Helen Anderson, and brothers Peter, Earl and George DeRoche.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am 1:00pm on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00pm on Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Fr. Dan Moll to officiate. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 at the conclusion of the services. Pallbearers will be Daniel, Charles, Donny and David DeRoche, Brian Willey, Danny Tonge and Abraham Bussu.
Donald's family wishes to thank the staff at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans and the U.P. Home Health and Hospice for their care and compassion shown to Donald and his family.
