NEGAUNEE - The Negaunee school board on Monday approved hiring three additional support staff members for the Negaunee Public Schools District.
Two classroom aides and a bus driver were hired, Superintendent Dan Skewis said.
"It was a quiet meeting as far as agenda items go," he said.
Skewis said he also gave the board an update on the district's summer sinking fund projects. The $500,000 projects include the construction of eight new tennis courts and a storage facility at Negaunee High School near the swimming pool, removal of the old tennis courts near the football field to expand the football team's practice field, replacement of parts of the fire alarm system at Lakeview School and replacement of carpeting at all three of the district's schools.
"We're almost finished with the tennis courts," Skewis said. "We just need to install the windscreen, and that should be here next week."
Skewis said there will also be seed and mulch added to areas of topsoil around the courts and that the carpeting project will wrap up by the end of this week.
The board also accepted a foreign exchange student for Negaunee High School. Applications from foreign exchange students come in throughout the summer, Skewis said, and the most recent application brings the total number of foreign exchange students scheduled to attend Negaunee schools this fall to nine.
In addition, the board approved raising the wages of substitute classroom aides and secretaries to $8.40 an hour and granted the extension of an unpaid medical leave.
