MARQUETTE - The U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-America Midwest Winds Woodwind Quintet will be making a number of stops in the central Upper Peninsula starting Tuesday.
Headquartered at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, the band will be making stops in Gwinn, Negaunee, Ishpeming, Iron Mountain and Marquette.
The band's website explains its function: "The Band of Mid-America has a long history of entertaining the American public and promoting esprit de corps within the military. The unit strives to inspire the hearts and minds of our men and women serving around the world and to tell the Air Force story through the universal language of music. Each year, the Band of Mid-America performs for millions of people throughout a 10-state region from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Oklahoma."

Its first local stop on this tour is in Gwinn Tuesday, according to a release from the Forsyth Township Historical Society, the group which is presenting that performance.
The quintet will be in Gwinn at 7 p.m. The concert will be held at the pavilion near the Veterans Memorial, in Nordeen Park in downtown Gwinn, and is open to the public. There will be no charge for admission.
A limited number of seats are available on the lawn but audience members are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. In case of inclement weather the Gwinn VFW Club will serve as the alternate site for the event.

Next, the quintet will perform at the Negaunee Senior Center, 410 Jackson St., at noon on Wednesday.
Thursday, the band will be at the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library. The band will put on a concert with kids in mind at 2 p.m. then at 6 p.m. will present a performance for all ages.

On Friday, Aug. 22, the quintet will be performing at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain at 1:30 p.m. (CT).
The group's final concert will be at noon Saturday, Aug. 23 during Harbor Fest in Ellwood Mattson Lower Harbor Park in Marquette.
