Book Tour: Three NMU alums showcased in August

August 11, 2014
Mining Journal

Author Suzi Banks Baum wrote, "As a mother you have thoughts. You get interrupted. You forget. You are distracted. Your thoughts and ideas become fragmented, diluted or simply evaporate. You must have faith that you will again have a thought.

Creativity is the string upon which you hang the pearls of your identity, your authentic presence."

Everyone knows you need patience to be a mother. Patience, persistence, love, etc. Often, asserting all those things and more into one human being can take all the day's energy, leaving little opportunity for "mommy time." How can we be good mothers and still be inspired?

Sometimes we need a little encouragement and reassurance.

A tour of Giving Motherhood a Voice: A Conversation about the Creative Lives of Women will make a stop in Marquette at 2 p.m. August 15.

This tour, for the book "An Anthology of Babes," encourages mothers and women to find their creativity.

"Babes" is a collection of tales from 36 mothers who each discuss their struggle and success with inspiration post child. Three locations in the Upper Peninsula will host the tour and each event will include readings by authors Banks Baum, Kathy Drue and. Monica Devine.

The author readings will then be followed by a conversation with audience members celebrating the ingenuity of even the most uncelebrated acts of parenting.

"We often struggle to retain our creative connection while changing diapers, carpooling, driving kids to basketball practice, [and] negotiating teenage boundary disputes," Drue said in one of her recent blogs.

All three women are Northern Michigan University Alumni, U.P. natives and have a deep love for the Superior shore.

The tour will also include music by Terri L. Bocklund, a composer and singer, inspired by her artist-in-residency on Isle Royale in Lake Superior.

Tour dates are as follows:

Escanaba Public Library: 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Marquette Arts and Cultural Center (located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library): 2 p.m. Friday.

Joy Center of Ishpeming: 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

For questions about this event, contact the city of Marquette Arts and Culture Center at 906-228-0472 or e-mail arts-culture@mqtcty.org.
