TRAVERSE CITY, MI. - Lenore Elaine Lindstrom Wood, a long-time resident of the Traverse City area, passed away unexpectedly August 6, 2014.
She was born December 1, 1936 to the late Toivo and Alma (Juntunen) Lindstrom in Baltic, Michigan, located in the Upper Peninsula. Following her graduation from Hancock High School she attended Highland Park Nursing School becoming a Registered Nurse in 1958. She married her husband, Stanley I. Wood, in 1957.
She is survived by daughters Jo Anne Wood of Traverse City and Denise Wood of Denver, Colorado, son-in-law Brian (Cheryl) Kissel, of Manistee, and daughter-in-law Jennifer (Bobby) Teal, of Chesterfield. She was dedicated grandmother to eight grandchildren, Samantha (David) Ashpaugh, Mike Docksey, Kandy and Abi Kissel, Christina, Rachel and Darci Wood, and R.J. Teal, and great-grandson Kurtis Ashpaugh.
She is also survived by brother, William "Bill" (Audrey) Lindstrom of White Pine, and sisters Elizabeth "Betty" (Al) Kempainen of Saalo, and Evelyn Puuri of Woodbridge, Virginia as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by Stan, her husband of more than 50 years, son Michael Wood and daughter, Cheryl (Brian) Kissel, her parents, and brother Richard "John" Lindstrom.
Elaine, as she was known to her family was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be missed by all those who had the honor and privilege of knowing her.
She was also very proud of her Upper Peninsula Finnish heritage.
She was an avid Detroit Tiger and Red Wings fan. After retiring from many years of nursing at Munson Medical Center and Traverse Regional Psychiatric Hospital, she and her husband enjoyed many years of travel with friends and family. She was also an amazing crocheter who was well known for her beautiful afghans.
Family and friends may pay their respect at a visitation to be held Sunday, August 10, 2014 from 4:00 pm 7:00 pm at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Monday, August 11, 2014 at 11:00 am with luncheon to follow at the Church. Interment will follow at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
