NEGAUNEE - Buck's Party Store opened a two-game lead in Class A of the Iron Range Women's Softball League by winning on July 30.
Buck's improved to 10-1 with a 28-4 victory over Martin's Sports Apparel 1. Nikki Christensen was 4 for 5 with a homer and teammate Liz Wills 4 for 4 for the winners, while Steph Cosellian went 2 for 3 with a triple and Maria Honkala and Jenna Pietila each homered for Martin.
U.P. Home Health fell back into a three-way tie for second place at 8-3 after Sister's pulled off an 8-7 upset in extra innings. Amy Barnes was 5 for 5 with two triples for Sister's, while UPHH's Molly Wales and Bobbi Ayotte both were 3 of 4 as Wales also doubled.
Venice 1 is part of the second-place tie after beating Rookies Too/Quality Car Care, 18-12. Nikki Whitford was 5 for 5, Amy Steele 4 for 4 and Ann Wilder knocked in five runs for Venice, while Becky Moyle and Rhonda Williams each had three hits for Rookies/Quality.
The third leg of the second-place tie is held up by U.P. Off Road & Performance, which upended Jubilee Foods 20-9.
Jessica Harper and Stacie Kruse had identical 4-for-5 lines as each homered for the winners, while Susie Rice was 4 for 4 with a triple for Jubilee.
In the other game in the division, Jasper Ridge 1 held off Crossfit 906, 17-4. LeAnn Saarela and Megan Chapman each homered and Vanessa Taavola was 4 for 4 for Jasper, while Janine Chapman was 2 for 2 for Crossfit.
In Class B, Jack's Teepee fell into a four-way tie for the lead at 8-3 with a 13-7 loss to Signs Unlimited. Becca LaChapelle and Jessica Koski each went 4 for 4 for Signs, while Taylor Croley tripled for Jack's.
Sharing the top spot are Pasquali's, Fox Negaunee and Cliffs Natural Resources.
Nicki Frisk cracked five hits and collected eight RBIs, while teammate Brandee Korpi added four hits in Pasquali's 26-17 slugfest over Red Rock Lanes. Linda Carello had three hits and Kori Tossava tripled for Red Rock.
Toni Enrietti homered and teammate Alexis Forchini doubled in Fox Negaunee's 22-7 win over Jasper Ridge 2.
Cliffs Natural Resources played longball in a 24-5 victory over Hickey's. The winners' Cassy Sandberg hit two homers while teammates Nikki Schultz, Randi Boule, Lacey Pietro, Jess Syrjala and Julie Boule all added single roundtrippers. For Hickey's, Rachel Gray was 2 for 2.
Dave's Collision could've made it a five-way tie on top but lost to Paradise, 11-8. Jen Polkki and Maria Stanaway each went 3 for 3 for Paradise, while Danielle Peterson, who doubled, and Lisa Carlson were both 3 for 4 for Dave's.
In Class C, Eagles and Chappers remain tied at 10-1 with relatively easy wins.
Eagles dropped Eastwood, 19-3, as Joy Prisk, who homered, Amber Nault, who doubled, and Amy Bazinette all went 4 for 4. Eastwood's Ellen Sundberg went 3 for 3 with a triple while teammate Cheryl Churack was 2 for 3.
Chappers found its hitting stroke in a 26-11 win over Creative Industries
The winners' Tayler Gray, Thalicia Gray, Veronica Slone and Joanna Smail each went 4 for 4, while teammate Ashley Asgaard was 3 for 3. Among those perfect days, Tayler Gray hit two homers; Thalicia Gray a homer, triple and two doubles; Slone and Smail each a homer and double; and Asgaard a homer.
Creative's Ashley Talus and Carley Maki added 4-for-4 days. Talus had a triple, double and two RBIs while Maki a triple and three RBIs.
Wooden Nickel remained within two games of the top by edging Palomaki Family Chiropractic, 15-13. Sydney Higgins was 3 for 3 and Janet Ely 2 for 3 for Nickel, while Jenn Quayle and Jen Flynn both went 2 for 3 for Palomaki.
Martin Sports Apparel 2 is also two back of the frontrunners after downing Willey's Tire Shop, 18-8. Sarah Massie, who hit two homers, one a grand slam, and Nikki Klenc both went 3 for 3 for the winners. Terri Willey was 3 for 3 and Penny Kipling 2 for 2 with a double for Willey's.
Venice 2 outlasted Xccelerated Fitness, 6-3, as Venice's Jen Ogea was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and teammate Amy Richards was 2 for 3.
Xccelerated's Carla Lovern and Amy Anderson each went 2 for 3.
Rookie's blasted past U.P. Fabricating, 25-9, as the winners' Ally Solander homered and Jocelyn Clickner tripled. For UPF, Val Prusi cranked a grand slam homer while Jessa Johnson was 3 for 3.
