CHATHAM - Organizers were getting ready today for the Alger County Fair, which opens to the public Friday morning at the Rock River Township Park in Chatham and runs through Sunday.
The small-town event is a popular draw in Alger County, offering something for everyone from numerous exhibits, demonstrations and a greased pig contest to the Grandparent of the Year award, Little Miss Alger County competition, crowning of the homecoming queen, classic cars and a chicken barbecue.
The three-day fair opens to the public at 9 a.m. Friday and closes at 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission to the fair is $5 for adults for all three days, $3 for children for all three days, $2 daily for ages 13 years and older, $1 daily for children 6-12 years of age and free for children ages 5 and younger.

Early registration was held Wednesday. Today, entries will be taken from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., with rabbit and poultry entries free pullorum testing from 3 to 5 p.m.
Some of the highlights of the fair include:
Friday: 9 a.m., fair opens; youth and open livestock judging and showing begins with swine; 10 a.m., goats and sheep; 11 a.m. dairy cattle; noon, beef cattle and horse speed events; 5:30 p.m., Grandparent of the Year Competition; 6 p.m., Little Miss Alger County Competition ($5 contestant entry fee).
Saturday: 8:30 a.m., fair opens; 9 a.m., antique tractor show begins; 10 a.m., rabbit and poultry judging; Super Yooper Dog Challenge; 4-H activities in the Youth Building until 4 p.m.; 11 a.m., miniature horse show; 12:30 p.m., Great Bean Cook-Off; scavenger hunt; 1 p.m., horse show pleasure class; 2 p.m., Chatham Homecoming Parade; 3 p.m., antique tractor pull; 4-H dog agility demonstration; 3:30 p.m., annual pig roast; 4 p.m., team penning; 7:30 p.m., homecoming queen crowning, dance to follow.
Sunday: 8 a.m., fair opens; 9:30 a.m., horse show pleasure class; 10 a.m., classic car display begins; 11:30 a.m., homecoming chicken barbecue; 1 p.m., firefighter contest; 3 p.m., People's Choice Award Classic Cars, greased pig contest; 5 p.m., fair closes.
ALTRAN provides public transportation to and from the fair on Friday and Saturday.
