Although hard to believe, we are already over halfway through 2014. I thought this would be a good time to give an update on what the LSCP has been up to over the past six months and report some of our results. As always, we have been busy! And by "we," I am including all of our partners and stakeholders that make things happen.
Early in 2014, we hosted an Economic Outlook event, assisted with Operation Action U.P.'s Annual Meeting, hosted a Brownfield Redevelopment and Taxation Seminar as well as hosted our own Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting once again featured our Plus One Awards. The Plus One program is designed around the premise that an employer adding just one employee contributes to the economic development in Marquette County. This year we recognized 48 Marquette County businesses for creating 241 new jobs. Since the inception of the program seven years ago, Marquette County businesses have created 2,022 jobs. If your company has added a new position in 2014, please contact our office so we can recognize your company.
Our two fundraising events met or exceeded our budget this year! The Annual Dinner, held in March, had more of a casual theme and the attendees really seemed to enjoy it. We had over 240 in attendance and raised a record amount of money for economic development. The event was a great opportunity for networking and meeting new people in the business community. In June we held our golfing outing at Greywalls. Again, this is an excellent networking opportunity and we were fortunate to have a beautiful day.
We have had a productive first half of the year in our Business Development department. So far this year we have visited 196 clients (52 start-up, 7 attraction and 137 expansion/retention). With those visits, 145 jobs are projected, 5,292 jobs are impacted and 9 jobs have been retained for a total investment of $23,137,161. These clients are all over Marquette County with 57 in the City of Marquette, Marquette Township and Chocolay Township, 17 on the west end of the county and 4 in the south. Twenty one of these clients are non-region specific.
Legislation affecting businesses keeps us hopping! We're tracking education reform, the federal debt crisis, transportation funding, personal property tax, internet online sales tax and wetland reform as an example. We constantly share information with our board and our government relations webpage is up to date to ensure our partners are informed about issues that affect our area and their business.
A few additional highlights from the first half of the year include the graduation of our 15th Lake Superior Leadership Academy class, graduation of our 11th class of Line Technician School, Derek Bush's Economic Modeling Specialists International Certification and our Ambassadors trip to Lansing.
In the coming months we are looking forward to the start of the Lake Superior Leadership Academy. This program brings together potential leaders from the area to address pertinent community needs, strengthens individual leadership abilities and encourages participants to personally commit to assuming new leadership roles in the community. Also, stay tuned for information on an exciting new business tool, Size Up, which will launch next month. This software will provide LSCP partners with data on how they compare to their competitors, the location of potential customers and assistance with markets to tap for advertising. You won't want to miss out on being able to access this one.
