MARQUETTE - The Alger County Animal Shelter is working to raise funds for its facility through "Fence For Fidoes."
"The fence would allow the animals a space to run," said Chris Ledbetter, marketing and promotions director for the shelter. "And it would allow space when a potential adopter comes to the shelter for the family and their present dog to interact in a controlled environment with a dog they want to adopt."
The organization is hoping to raise money for the fence by Aug. 15. Its addition will create a protected space for safety, exercise, stimulation, and playing as there is no fence around the shelter at present.
FENCE FOR FIDOES
Ledbetter said the shelter welcomes donations of any amount, small or large, to help reach the goal of $5,000.
Those making a $100 donation can have a "Sponsored By" or "Memory Of" plaque hung on the fence. Forms are available on the organization's website or by contacting the shelter. The website has a video about the fence as well.
"I want everyone to know we're run strictly on donation," Ledbetter said. "We keep the animals, no matter what age they are, until they are adopted."
The number of animals cared for at the shelter varies, but as of this morning, it has nine cats and three dogs waiting for their forever homes, Ledbetter said.
The shelter is open from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Other hours are available by appointment.
Yearly membership fees for the Alger County Animal Shelter are: regular membership $15; family membership $20; and students (full-time) and seniors (62 and up) $5.
Regular Business Memberships are also available for $50 per year. Silver Business Membership is $100 per year, and a Lifetime Gold Business Membership is $1,000.
